#InTheHeartOfThePalau
The Palma Convention Center has brought together its main suppliers in a day to highlight and value its eco-efficient and sustainable management model, which has the necessary technology to reduce its environmental footprint. During this session, Meliá Hotels International (managing company of the convention center), in collaboration with its partners Endesa, Ledvance, Melchor Mascaró, Otis and Viesgo, have gone into the heart of the building to highlight the keys that contribute to make the city of Palma a “smart destination".
In the field of energy efficiency, the building is supplied with 100% renewable energy and its management system allows to monitor consumption instantly and optimize its performance. This technological control helps to make much smarter decisions. The architect of the building, Paxti Mangado, explained how the design of the facade and its materials allow to separate light and heat to improve the energy performance of the building. In addition, Meliá Hotels International has made several investments to boost eco-efficiency, such as the installation of an automatic start system in escalators or the optimization of lighting in meeting rooms.
On the other hand, the convention center aims to promote environmental awareness among its customers and therefore has launched an ecofriendly program, "ecomeet", which facilitates the application of sustainable criteria. It also promotes sustainable mobility, providing a service for renting electric bicycles.
At the same time, the convention center’s waste management system has allowed the building to achieve a recycling rate of 66%, far higher than the European Union's target for 2020, which is 50%.
The daily management decisions are also aligned to be much more responsible with both the environment and the community. Thus, for example, an inclusive and responsible supply chain has been promoted, collaborating at present with more than 200 local suppliers.
Regarding social commitment, the Convention Center has promoted initiatives especially aimed to support the most vulnerable children in Palma, to bring quality leisure for residents and tourists or to promote the employability and training of people at risk of social exclusion, among others.
These commitments are the proof that the tourism industry can be not only a very important economic asset, but also an indispensable ally in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations General Assembly.
