Portopí lighthouse, symbol of Palma
Located at one end of the port of Palma, the lighthouse of Portopí has been in operation for centuries, being the oldest lighthouse in the Balearic Islands, the second oldest in Spain and the third in Europe, behind the Tower of Hercules and the Lantern of Genoa.
This construction has witnessed many historical moments, the economic evolution of the island, the attack of pirates and the arrival of thousands of sailors. In addition, the lighhouse has suffered in his own flesh the passage of time. Since 1300 and up to the present, it has changed its location and has been adapting to new technologies, from using iron lamps powered by oil to electric lamps.
Seven centuries later, the lighthouse of Portopí continues performing the function for which it was created, but, in addition, it has another: it has become a cultural space that houses a permanent exhibition of maritime signs located in a building attached to the signal tower.
