Palma Convention Centre hosted 173 events in 2017 and over 30,000 attendees

In April 2017, the Palma Convention Centre began operations after a long construction and opening process, finally beginning a new era for congress travel in Palma, its most significant pending opportunity, and introducing a new venue for major Spanish and international events.

The Convention Centre is one of the most versatile in the entire Mediterranean and has been designed to respond to the needs of modern event organizers who also seek extra complementary experiences for their clients. The first few months of operations confirm the excellent reception it has received in the European MICE market, meeting their need for a new destination within easy reach of major European cities.

The sales force of Meliá Hotels International, the company that manages the Convention Centre and its adjoining hotel, the Meliá Palma Bay, has made major efforts over the year to promote the facilities in Europe, taking part in numerous trade fairs and hosting fam-trips and press trips that have helped transmit the image of the Convention Centre to its most important potential clients.

The company has expressed its satisfaction with the 2017 results, which its CEO, Gabriel Escarrer, described as "exceptional" during the latest edition of FITUR, the most important travel trade fair held in Spain.

Escarrer took stock of the first few months of activity, in which the Convention Centre hosted 173 events in 2017 and over 30,000 attendees.

By event type, highlights included five medical congresses, one of the most important business travel markets and a target market for the Convention Centre, which aims to become a market leader for congresses in the Mediterranean.

The Convention Centre also hosted a wide variety of cultural and leisure events, charity events, fairs and meetings of different sizes. The most important event in terms of revenue and the economic impact on the city was the global presentation of a new car model, visited by more than 12,000 people in the low season who also enjoyed the extensive leisure facilities in Palma, further emphasising the major advantages of this type of tourism for the city.

Forecasts for 2018 are also very positive, as Escarrer said, "we currently have more than 30 events confirmed for this year, with more than 22,000 visitors." Congresses are normally planned well in advance and will play a more relevant role in the Convention Centre calendar in its second year. 12 congresses have already been confirmed for the year, of which 8 are medical events, as well as 6 international trade fairs and conventions.
