Promoting Children's rights
Since 1954, on November 20 is celebrated the International Children's Day, a global call for children and the most vulnerable ones to promote the recognition of their rights and ensure their welfare and development.
On this date, Meliá Hotels International - management group of the Palma Convention center and the Meliá Palma Bay hotel - has once again joined the international community in the promotion and defense of the children’s rights, since the protection from childhood is the backbone of the company's social positioning and one of the four pillars of its global model of corporate responsibility.
In 2006, Meliá became the first Spanish company to sign the Code of Conduct against Child Sexual Exploitation, the ECPAT Code, and in 2010 signed a strategic alliance with UNICEF to promote its work and share resources in defense of the education, the fundamental rights of children and the fight against child sexual exploitation. Since that date, Meliá has raised about one and a half million euros among its clients.
As the management company of the Palma Convention Center and its hotel, Meliá Hotels International wants to contribute to make this public space not only into an economic driver for the city of Palma, but also into a platform for generating shared value, thus extending its commitment with childhood as a priority lever of its social action.
In its first months of activity, the Palma Convention Center complex has sought to promote its social positioning in favor of children, becoming part of the strategic collaboration program with UNICEF to raise awareness among clients and employees and boost fundraising. In addition, the Center has given its space for social purposes for the celebration of the first solidary concert offered by the “Fundació Orquestra Simfònica de les Illes Balears”, performed by a representation of the Symphony Orchestra and a hundred young students members of the "Petita Simfónica" project , resulting from the collaboration of the Symphony with 36 schools and music conservatories of the Balearic Islands. This event not only highlighted the importance of creating spaces of coexistence and musical learning among young people, but also served to raise more than 6,000 euros to fund projects for children managed by UNICEF.
Since its opening, the Convention Cener and the Meliá Palma Bay hotel have developed various initiatives for the benefit of youngsters in risk of social exclusion in Palma, such as the sponsorship of the Solidarity Race promoted by the Rafa Nadal Foundation, to help the more vulnerable children group of the “Nou LLevant” neighborhood, in which both the Center and the Foundation itself are located. Subsequently, the Convention Center also organized a day of fun for a group of more than 60 children from the neighborhood, who enjoyed a day of entertainment at the Katmandu Park amusement park.
These actions are a sign of commitment to children, with a special focus on the most vulnerable groups in Palma, which will continue to be promoted in the future with new initiatives that will strengthen the transformative impact of the Convention Center, also in the social context.
