ECOMEET, THE SUSTAINABLE EVENTS PROGRAMME
The Palau de Congressos Convention Center in Palma is promoting sustainable attributes to differentiate its meetings and events services. That is why it has created ECOMEET, a new sustainable events programme which was premiered at the inauguration of the Convention Centre, a further sign of the its commitment to the efficient and responsible use of resources.
After the inauguration of the Palau de Congressos, the company calculated the carbon footprint of the event. Attended by around a thousand people, the event generated 6.01 metric tonnes of CO2 in scopes 1, 2, and 3 (referring to the treatment of the waste generated), equivalent to the footprint that would be generated by 489 stays in our hotels (according to our 2016 Carbon Footprint of 12.29 Kg CO2 per stay).
The objective is to compensate these CO2 emissions with the reforestation of an area in the Llevant region of Mallorca, similar to the action carried out in 2016 in the same area near Artá, where almost two hectares of trees were planted with the capacity to absorb 120.89 metric tonnes of CO2.
ECOMEET is the sustainable events programme that Meliá Hotels International offers customers who see sustainability and taking care of the planet as a way of life, and apply those principles to all their business activities. ECOMEET events mainly focus on the use of spaces that are accessible and energy efficient; the use of recycled materials and the minimization of waste; the selective collection and recycling of all of the waste generated; the reduction of CO2 emissions; and the measurement and compensation of the carbon footprint caused by electricity use and heating and air conditioning.
